I pledge take action to support clean water in Northern Virginia! I will:
Never dispose of anything down the storm drain, including litter, chemicals, yard waste, and pool water—and help make sure litter in the street is picked up and thrown in the proper waste receptacle.
Pick up and properly dispose of my pet’s waste—and consider using biodegradable or compostable pet waste bags.
Limit the amount of salt or ice melt used as much as possible—and remember that it helps to shovel snow first and reuse excess salt after winter storms.
Maintain my car and regularly check it for leaks so these fluids don’t enter nearby storm drains.
Wash my car at a carwash when possible. If I wash my car at home, I will limit water use, choose environmentally friendly detergents, wash over unpaved surfaces, and properly dispose of soapy water.
Practice responsible lawn and garden care. I will properly dispose of or compost yard waste; limit the amounts of water, fertilizer, and pesticides I apply; conduct a soil test before fertilizing to understand what nutrients are needed; and opt for native plants that need less water.
Make sure my trash is properly bagged and placed in the appropriate garbage or recycling bin and dispose of hazardous waste at a local waste recycling or collection center.
Renovate my home carefully, including properly disposing of litter, chemicals, and building scraps, so the surrounding environment isn’t negatively impacted by runoff.

Thank you for pledging to keep your community healthy and safe by reducing the amount of pollution that reaches local waterways. These simple steps will ensure there is enough clean water for drinking, recreation, and for wildlife to survive and thrive.
